What Is Mohs?

Mohs surgery is a specialized procedure that has become the gold standard for treating many skin cancers. It is proven to have the highest cure rates while sparing healthy tissue and leaving the smallest scar possible.

Why Was This Brochure Created?

Because it is done in stages while the patient waits, Mohs surgery is complex. Many patients may not know what to expect. That’s why The Skin Cancer Foundation partnered with the American College of Mohs Surgery to create this patient-friendly brochure, which explains the advantages of the treatment and illustrates what happens step by step.

Who Needs Mohs?

Mohs is often recommended for basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) and squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs), including those in cosmetically and functionally important areas around the eyes, nose, lips, ears, scalp, fingers, toes or genitals. It is also recommended for BCCs or SCCs that are large, aggressive or growing rapidly, that have indistinct edges, or have recurred after previous treatment. Some surgeons are also successfully using Mohs surgery on certain cases of melanoma.

Who Should Buy This Brochure?

Mohs surgeons, dermatologists and plastic surgeons, as well as primary care physicians who do skin checks and may refer patients to Mohs surgeons.
