Overview

An estimated 700,000 new cases of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) are diagnosed every year in the US. That makes it the second most common skin cancer, after basal cell carcinoma.

This form of skin cancer arises in the squamous cells that make up most of the skin's outermost layer, the epidermis. SCC may occur on all areas of the body including the mucous membranes and genitals, but is most common in the areas frequently exposed to the sun, such as the rim of the ear, lower lip, face, balding scalp, neck, hands, arms and legs. Daily year-round exposures to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) light, not just intense exposure in the summer months, all add to the cumulative damage that can lead to SCC.
