Overview
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common form of skin cancer, with approximately 2.8 million cases diagnosed in the US each year. In fact, it is the most common of all cancers. More than one out of every three new cancers are skin cancers, and the vast majority are BCCs. These cancers arise in the basal cells, which line the deepest layer of the epidermis (top skin layer). BCCs rarely become life-threatening, and unlike the second and third most common skin cancers, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma, rarely spread beyond the original tumor site.
